Challenges of Agrarian Transition in Southeast Asia
Despite urbanization, rural Southeast Asia today is home to more people than ever before. The ChATSEA book series offers a grounded, multi-disciplinary perspective on the challenges of sustaining rural livelihoods and the new forms of social, economic and political life that are emerging across the region. From the uplands of Vietnam to the rice fields of Laos and the forests of Borneo, rural lives and livelihoods are being reconfigured under the impact of globalization, pressures to intensify production, calls for conservation, and struggles over identity and belonging. Patterns the authors identify in Southeast Asia resonate in other world regions, and confirm the continuing significance and intellectual vibrancy of rural research today.
