Marketing and Communications Manager

Job Summary

NUS Press, the university press publishing arm of the National University of Singapore, seeks a dynamic and self-motivated Marketing and Communications Manager to design and implement our outreach and interaction with book buyers, readers and authors, using the key channels of academic publishing: our online presence, our presence at academic events, and in bookshops and libraries around the world. 

As part of a small, collaborative team, the successful candidate will be a proactive self-starter responsible for independently planning, executing, and evaluating comprehensive marketing and communications efforts to enhance the visibility of our books, journals and online resources. The role requires demonstrated awareness of the issues of interest to our authors and academic readers, as reflected in our publishing programme: chiefly Asia-related social sciences and humanities, and cross-disciplinary fields of direct relevance to the region like urban studies and public health. 

This position reports directly to the Managing Director and offers opportunities for advancement as the Press expands. The role is based in Singapore and involves managing relationships with partners, authors, and stakeholders at NUS and around the world.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Strategic planning and execution: Develop and implement sales and marketing plans, including annual budgeting and performance analysis, at list, channel and individual title levels. Every book has a unique audience, and you will need the flexibility, creativity and time management skills to think through — in partnership with our authors — efficient strategies for all of them.
  • Metadata and book information management:  The foundation of our outreach efforts is high-quality metadata on our books, authors, journals and online resources. The role requires cooperation with author and our editors to develop and maintain high quality information about all our projects in our title management and wiki systems.
  • Channel Management: While the Director and Administrator will manage key relations with our distributors, you will play a vital role in supporting those relationships, problems-solving and adapting marketing strategies according to their needs and abilities.
  • Publicity and Promotion: Plan and execute creative campaigns across print, digital, and social media platforms; manage our online presence, media pitches and pitches to academic journals and events.
  • Conferences and Events: Nothing beats the human touch. NUS Press requires a vital and active presence at events around the world, from academic conferences to professional meetings, book launches and seminars. Help us mobilise the NUS Press global network. Some travel will be required, to Europe, North America and the region.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; at least three-to-five years of relevant experience in books, online or academic or professional sales and marketing.
  • Proven track record as a self-starter with project management skills, capable of independently planning and executing initiatives in a small-team setting.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; proficiency in digital tools, databases, social media, and analytics.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, including weekends, for events and conferences.
  • Demonstrated awareness of academic Asian studies, including familiarity with key issues in the social sciences and humanities.

Appointment Information

Scholarly Publishing Fellow

This is an opportunity for a recent PhD graduate or researching Doctoral student to learn more about academic publishing, and to deepen their knowledge of and networking within the academic community. The role is to assist and shadow the Director, NUS Press in the acquisition of books and projects for publication. It will involve interactions with colleagues in the editorial and marketing function. Successful candidates will have strong research skills and curiosity about of scholarly work in the humanities and social sciences. A great deal of independent research will be required.

The Trainee will gain exposure to the following areas of publishing: 
  • Editorial function of scholarly publishing 
  • Scholarly publishing acquisitions 
  • Academic peer review and peer review management  
  • Editing and quality control in scholarly publishing 
  • Scholarly journal editing and publishing 
  • Author marketing for a scholarly publisher 
Responsibilities include:
  • Helping to evaluate incoming book proposals & manuscripts;
  • Identifying peer reviewers from academic community most suited to particular titles;
  • Managing peer review process, including chasing and reminders to reviewers, and evaluating peer review reports;
  • Identifying academic journals to review NUS Press books;
  • Targeting authors or author communities for approach, coming up with new ideas for books for NUS Press to publish.
While Singapore residents are preferred, we will consider applicants who would work remotely from outside of Singapore, on a contract basis.

Internships

NUS Press has year-round internships available: during the NUS Academic Yer Semester One (Aug to Nov), year-end vacation (Dec), NUS AY Semester Two (Jan to April), and during the summer vacation (May to July).

Our vacation internships are full-time, approximately 40 hours a week. Semester internships are part-time and range from 12-20 hours a week. Start and end dates are negotiable, and interns are paid an honorarium of $8 per hour. 

Interns get introduced to the full range of activities associated with academic and general book publishing (editorial, marketing, and production). Introductory proofreading and copy editing sessions, as well as visits to commercial printers (when possible), will be conducted. Interns typically take on tasks such as proofreading, book sales, formulating marketing proposals, data entry, fact-checking, event planning, accounts, etc.
